XXXVIII Olympiad of Ecological Knowledge

On April 15, 2023, at the University of Applied Sciences in Nysa, which served as the Provincial Committee, the district stage of the XXXVIII Olympiad of Ecological Knowledge was held. The University's partner and sponsor of prizes for participants who qualified for the central stage was UMICORE POLAND - a world leader in the production of battery components, which has a production facility in Nysa.

The company's long-term goal is to implement RISE's "Let's Go for Zero" strategy, including minimizing the negative effects of the business and maximizing positive social and climate impacts. Umicore not only creates new technologies and products but also recycles to reuse rare metals according to a closed-loop philosophy.

UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES implements the idea of sustainable development included in the University's strategy. This includes both promoting sustainability in society, expanding educational curricula to include its elements, and adapting the University to operate in accordance with its principles.

Certified quality, environmental, and energy management systems have also already been implemented, and the University has been highly ranked as one of several universities from Poland in the "Green Metrix" ranking.

The University has also expanded its educational offer to include a master's degree program in production management and engineering, whose graduates will receive knowledge and practical skills in, among other things, the use of modern energy sources and the design and management of processes for a closed-loop economy. The substantive organizer and patron of the Ecological Knowledge Olympiad is the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, with the support of the Minister of Climate and Environment and units of the League for Nature Protection.

The main objectives of the Olympiad are:

  • Formation of environmental awareness and proper attitudes in young people towards the natural environment, inspiring and developing interest in nature.
  • Evoking the research activity of the young generation and inspiring them to take initiatives and practical actions to protect and improve the environment, landscape, and living conditions of people
  • Popularization of ecological issues in terms of effective prevention of pollution and environmental degradation processes and implementation of the principles of sustainable development.
  • To promote methods of biodiversity protection and conservation of natural resources.
  • Familiarizing young people with the current literature and legislation in force in the field of environmental protection

Topics of the Olympiad included such issues as classical ecology, bodies of water and their protection, soils and their protection, agricultural and forestry management, food and health, nature conservation, air and its protection, waste management, noise, vibration, and radiation and effective protection against them, as well as current socio-economic issues related to the protection and formation of the environment.

The right to participate in Stage II (district) was given to three representatives of each institution who obtained a minimum of 80% correct answers in the written test organized in schools in January this year. (40 points). In Opole Province, 20 students representing 11 high schools met this requirement.

The task of the participants in the second stage was to solve 50 test questions in the written part.

In accordance with the regulations, 7 participants who obtained at least 70% correct answers were qualified for the oral part.

The oral stage consisted of answering 6 questions from the drawn set in front of the Competition Committee, the other students, and their supervisors.

The order of the winning places was determined by the combined score of the oral stage and the score obtained in the written part.

To the central finals, which will be held June 2-3. This year in Mazovia at the Zegrzyński Reservoir in Rynia, qualified 7 participants who showed the best results in both stages of the Olympiad: i.e., the oral and written parts.

  • Skolik Natalia – 50 points, Mikołaj Kopernik High School II in Kędzierzyn Koźle; supervisor:  Polinowska-Miłek Katarzyna

The evaluation of the works and speeches of the competition was carried out by the jury, consisting of:

  • Marta Misiarz, MD. PhD - (UAS in Nysa).
  • Aneta Adamczyk, MSc. Eng - (Complex of Schools and Educational Institutions in Nysa).
  • Anna Opalka, MA - Secretary (UAS in Nysa).

While the competition works were being checked, the students had the opportunity to participate in an experimental demonstration entitled: "Green energy as an element of sustainable development", which was conducted by Dr. Piotr Chwastyk, - Vice-Rector for Cooperation and Development at the University of Applied Sciences in Nysa.

On behalf of the sponsor, UMICORE Poland, the prizes consisted of vouchers for the purchase of electronic equipment worth 1000 PLN and were given by Ms. Agata Czechowska.
