International students’ workshops „Niemodlin CittaSlow – Beauty of small Town”, 29.05-02.06.2023

A week-long international student workshop was implemented as part of the Blended Intensive Program titled: "Beauty of a Small Town - Niemodlin CittaSlow. Revitalization of the market square and adjacent areas using the environmental systems method".

The scope of the project included the revitalization of the market square and adjacent areas of Niemodlin by seeking ways to achieve harmony in the relations of interacting elements of the human environment.

The purpose of the revitalization of the market square in Niemodlin, along with adjacent areas, was to achieve solutions functional and spatial solutions creating an improvement in the quality of public space (limited by the buildings around the market, including the adjacent city park, the surroundings of the castle, and the church) and the neighbourhood (within the courtyards of residential communities, forming a ring of buildings around the market). It was important to create an attractive marketplace that was friendly to residents and tourists, bring out the natural values of the city park, as well as improve the surroundings of the most important facilities adjacent to the Market Square, as well as enhancing the aesthetic and functional values of the spaces of the neighbourhood residential communities. The projects were based on a methodology in which the directions of revitalization activities included three components of the human environment: the natural environment, the socio-cultural environment, and the built environment.

Prior to the workshop, an environmental survey was prepared in cooperation with the Niemodlin district. The substantive assumption of the questionnaire was to get city residents interested in the issues of the revitalization of the city, to encourage active involvement in investing in their own plots on the Market Square and adjacent areas, to stimulate awareness of care and sensitivity towards the jointly used public spaces of the city.

A total of 24 students and 8 faculty members worked on the revitalization projects. In addition to students majoring in Architecture at PANS in Nysa, students from partner universities also took part: University of Granada in Spain and Cottbus Technical University in Germany. During the workshop, the students participated in a study trip that included cities of the Polish-Czech border region. In addition, each day began with lectures.

The culmination of the work carried out was the presentation of the concept in the castle chapel of Niemodlin Duke's Castle. In addition to the authorities of Niemodlin, the final presentation was attended by city residents.

The university's partner in the workshop and direct recipient of the developed results was the Niemodlin district.
