County English Language Competition for High School Students
On December 6, 2023, the County English Language Competition for High School Students took place at the University of Applied Sciences in Nysa. The Foreign Language School and the International Cooperation Office UAS in Nysa organized the event in collaboration with Oxford University Press. Twenty-eight students from 8 high schools in Nysa County participated in the competition.
The competition consisted of two stages. In the first stage, students faced a written section where they had to demonstrate their knowledge of vocabulary, grammar, and the culture of English-speaking countries, as well as their listening and reading comprehension skills. The second stage of the competition involved 10 students who achieved the best results in the written section.
The proficiency in the English language, both in writing and orally, was assessed by the judging panel, consisting of Mr. Mariusz Kowalski - Chairman, Ms. Beata Łucjanek, and Ms. Patrycja Twardowska from the University of Applied Sciences in Nysa.
Ultimately, after the oral stage, the judging panel selected 4 winners:
1st place – Olivia Sloan (Carolinum High School in Nysa)
2nd place – Józefina Parton (School of Arts in Nysa)
3rd place – Małgorzata Bujak (School of Arts in Nysa)
Honorable mention – Wojciech Pośpiech (Diocesan Humanities High School in Nysa)
During the evaluation of written works by the panel, students had the opportunity to attend a lecture by Dr. Hab. Mariusz Kamiński, Prof.: "On some (false) beliefs about the English language: A learner's perspective," and a presentation by Ms. Alyssa Sharp on "Christmas traditions in the USA" – an alumna of the Ohio State University in Columbus and a current Fulbright Program scholarship holder at the University of Applied Sciences in Nysa.
All participants received sweet Christmas packages, and the winners were awarded attractive prizes sponsored by the University of Applied Sciences in Nysa: gift cards from Media Expert, wireless headphones, as well as publications from Oxford University Press and the Publishing Office of the University of Applied Sciences in Nysa. Special thanks to the companies Intersnack Poland and Wacuś from Nysa for supporting the event by providing their products for the participants.
We express our gratitude to all teachers for their preparation, to the participants for their participation in the competition and the time spent together, and we warmly congratulate the winners! See you next year!
