Event Overview:

As universities strive to adapt to the evolving needs of society, sustainability emerges as a crucial guiding principle. The 15th edition of the International Staff Training Week (ISTW) at UAS in Nysa will focus on building sustainable universities that foster social, environmental, and technological progress. The event will delve into how institutions can integrate responsible innovation, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), while upholding sustainability in education, research, and operations. Participants will engage in discussions and activities centered on shaping a sustainable academic future. From digital transformation to environmental responsibility, this ISTW edition will provide a holistic view of what it means to be a "sustainable university" in the 21st century.

Introduction to the Theme:
A sustainable university not only commits to environmental stewardship but also embraces social responsibility and innovation in its teaching, research, and operational strategies. With Artificial Intelligence and other emerging technologies playing an increasingly significant role, higher education institutions must balance technological advancements with ethical, environmental, and social considerations. The theme, "Sustainable University: Balancing Innovation and Responsibility," aims to explore how universities can integrate innovative solutions while adhering to sustainability principles. The focus will be on collaborative solutions that enhance both the learning environment and the broader academic community.

Thematic Sessions:

1. AI in Sustainable Higher Education: Opportunities and Challenges
Explore how Artificial Intelligence can contribute to sustainable practices in universities, from optimizing resources to enhancing learning experiences. Discuss both the benefits and the ethical implications, ensuring responsible use of AI in academia.

2. Greening the Campus: Environmental Sustainability in Universities
Focus on initiatives and strategies that reduce the environmental footprint of universities. Topics will include energy efficiency, waste management, and sustainable campus design, highlighting best practices for reducing carbon emissions and promoting ecological responsibility.

3. Digital Transformation and Sustainability
As universities increasingly rely on digital tools, this session will explore the impact of technology on sustainability. How can institutions integrate AI, cloud computing, and other digital innovations in ways that support both operational efficiency and environmental goals?

4. Ethical and Social Responsibility in Higher Education
Delve into the social aspects of sustainability, focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion in university operations and policies. This session will address how universities can ensure ethical practices in the digital age and promote social justice alongside technological advancement.

5. Building Sustainable Research and Collaboration Networks
Sustainability goes beyond environmental concerns, also encompassing the longevity and impact of academic research. This session will discuss how universities can create sustainable research practices and build collaborative networks to tackle global challenges through research.

6. Future Perspectives on the Sustainable University
What does the future hold for universities aiming to become leaders in sustainability? This forward-looking session will explore emerging trends and discuss how institutions can plan for long-term sustainability, integrating technology, innovation, and social responsibility into their core missions.

General Objectives of the 15th ISTW:

  • Sharing Best Practices on Sustainability: Exchange knowledge on sustainable practices and solutions adopted by universities worldwide.
  • Engaging in Thematic Sessions: Participate in workshops and sessions that address various facets of sustainability, from AI's role to environmental responsibility.
  • Fostering International Collaboration: Build networks with other institutions working toward sustainable academic futures, encouraging collaborations on Erasmus+ projects and sustainability initiatives.
  • Skill Development: Enhance skills in areas like sustainable project management, resource optimization, and ethical decision-making within a university context.

Additional Activities:

  • Lectures for UAS Nysa students and Erasmus+ students (Available upon request)
  • Meetings with Departments and ICO (Arranged on request)
  • Sustainable Campus Tour Explore sustainable initiatives at UAS in Nysa and learn about green practices implemented across the campus.
  • Nysa Fortress Outdoor Party A social meeting with a sustainability theme, featuring eco-friendly activities and local food.

Key Dates:

  • Registration Deadline: 28 February 2025
  • Payment Deadline: 31 March 2025
  • Participation Fee: 150 Euro for all participants
    Fee includes: training programme, coffee breaks, lunches, cultural activities, promotional packages, certificates.
